If you suffer from an eating disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, depression, Bipolar Disorder, an anxiety disorder, and/or self-injury or another type of addiction, Dialectical Behavior Therapy may be a great thing for you to undergo.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was created by Marsha Linehan to treat Borderline Personality Disorder; however, DBT has been found to be effective for individuals suffering from many types of mental illness including those with eating disorders, depression, anxiety disorders, and those who engage in self-injury. DBT incorporates aspects of cognitive-behavioral therapy with mindfulness principles to teach individuals how to regulate emotions as well as distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Mindfulness teaches individuals how to live in the moment and to observe and experience one’s emotions with perspective. Interpersonal effectiveness taught in DBT teaches individuals how to say no, ask for what they need effectively, and coping skills for interpersonal conflict. Emotional regulation includes learning how to identify and label emotions, taking opposite actions, identifying challenges to changing emotions, increasing positive emotions, and increasing mindfulness. Finally, distress tolerance involves learning how to identify and tolerate distress.
If you think you may benefit from these skills, you may consider joining a DBT group. Dr. Kraslin offers two DBT groups for adults age 18 and older. You may attend her Tuesday group from 5:45-7:15pm or her Thursday group from 6:00-7:30pm. She offers free phone consultations, but charges an initial intake fee of $50. Additionally, there is a $50 fee per group.
If you would like to know more about the group or would like a free phone consultation, you may call Dr. Nikki Kraslin at: 303-507-5557 or e-mail her at: nkraslin@msn.com.
