Although the recalls of peanut butter by both King Nut and American Peanut Corporation dominated recall news this past week, there have been other recalls of food products for various reasons, as well. The peanut recall has placed one major American food manufacturer on alert, however.
Kellogg's Company, based in Battle Creek, Mich., announced Wedneday it is placing a cautionary hold on several of its snack products. Austin and Keebler brands toasted peanut butter sandwich rackers, peanut butter and jelly sandwich crackers, cheese and peanut butter sandwich crackers, and peanut butter-chocolate sandwich crackers are being withheld from distribution because of concerns these products may contain tainted peanut products. American Peanut Corporation is one of Kellogg’s suppliers for peanut paste. There have been no complaints or reports of illness.
No new developments have occurred since Wednesday, according to Kris Charles, a spokesperson for the company, but all the named products are being withdrawn from shelves or are being withheld from distribution until an investigation can dispel any concerns. If you have any unopened packages at home, don’t eat them until Kellogg’s gives the all-clear. Additional information
Café Favorites, a Minnesota manufacturer of lunch foods for school lunch programs, issued a recall Jan. 10 of its Whole Grain 5" Super Sub because of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The sandwiches were sold to distributors in Maryland, Florida, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania but, apparently, the product was only sold at one school, in the Washington, D.C. area. No illnesses have been reported as of this writing although a call to the company for an update was not immediately returned. Additional information
