It’s another notable week, unfortunately, for food recalls beginning with a major recall of ground beef in the Northeast.
Ground beef recalled for E.
coli
New Englanders are grappling with a recall of ground beef that has left at least 30 people ill and five hospitalized, according to Food Safety News. The Food Safety and Inspection Service published a recall notice on its web site Tuesday, four days after it was revealed that 20 Rhode Island middle school students had fallen ill after eating the E. coli contaminated ground beef at a camp in Massachusetts. Since then, the recall has grown to include not only Massachusetts and Rhode Island, but Connecticut and New Hampshire, and includes not only ground beef, but several different cuts of beef, as well.
Since then, Crocetti’s Oakdale Packing Co., doing business as South Shore Meats, Inc., in Brockton, Mass., has recalled 1,039 pounds of ground beef patties after Massachusetts health officials found it was contaminated with E. coli. The patties were made with bench trim as well as mechanically tenderized beef cuts. Bench trim is derived from the trimmings of whole cuts of meat, such as steaks. Because the trimmings can come from a wide range of sources, it’s often difficult to trace the original source of the contamination; despite that, use of bench trimmings is common practice among meat processors around the United States. Tortillas recalled in Texas
Two brands of tortillas have been recalled because they contain undeclared allergens. Coincidently, both companies – Mrs. Rios and Pop’s Bakery – are located in San Angelo, Texas, and they’re both recalling their flour tortillas because they contain undeclared milk products. The companies are not related, according to a spokeswoman with Mrs. Rios, and the tortillas are only distributed in Texas. Additional information

Dried fish recalled for possible botulism contamination
San Link, Inc., is recalling two of its varieties of vacuum-packed, dried fish because they were not gutted before being packaged. Uneviscerated fish can carry Clostridium botulinum spores which can cause botulism, a particularly dangerous and often lethal illness. San Link has recalled its Vacuum Pack Dried Lesh, and its Vacuum Packed Dried Krasnoperka, both of which are imported from Russia. Additional information
