For those who haven't heard, Jo-Ann's in Westland, located at Warren and Central City Parkway, will be closing at the end of the year.
The Westland Jo-Ann's was a 50,000-square-foot superstore with a Creative University, which offered classes to people wanting to learn many types of crafts.
The closure of this large Jo-Ann's store is a symptom of the poor economy in Michigan, but it also means that more people will be out of work. Not only Jo-Ann's employees, but also the contractors who taught the classes. It also means that yet another property will be vacant in Westland, which is a heavily-populated area.
This isn't new in Michigan, which has been hit hard by the economy in the last several years. Many companies have been closing stores throughout Michigan or leaving Michigan entirely in the past few years, which has cascaded into a loss of jobs, choking out retailers' ability to stay in business in Michigan. It's a vicious circle, and oddly, one that has led to more people turning to crafts so that they can still supply both the needs of their family, and thoughtful gifts with a lower price tag.
Jo-Ann's is still being tight-lipped about the reasons behind the closure, as well as future plans for Jo-Ann's stores in the area, but consumers have been discussing the closure for a month.
Locals will remember that Jo-Ann's in Livonia closed earlier this year as well. Many customers took to shopping at Jo-Ann's in Westland or Michael's. With the Westland store closing, Livonia and Westland residents will find their options more limited.
Jo-Ann's in Westland intends to stay open through the holiday season, but they aren't restocking so it will be harder to find the supplies you need for your projects as time goes on at that location.
Livonia had a store closing sale to clear their shelves, but so far customers haven't heard whether the same thing will happen in Westland. According to Hometown Life, the store will be open through the end of the year.
Though many stores have been shrinking or closing their crafts departments (Wal-Mart is a good example...they've removed fabric from most of their stores), Westland residents can still come to Canton for a good selection of craft supplies. Canton has Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and Jo-Ann's all on Ford Road, and Plymouth has several independent craft supply stores, including yarn shops and a bead shop. Jo-Ann's in Canton also has a Creative University, for people looking to learn new craft skills, and all 3 stores have regular sales on their products, which vary by what the store tends to focus on.
It's a good idea to sign up for promotional materials for all 3 stores so you can start stockpiling the materials you need for your fall and winter projects as well as holiday gifts at a discount. If you want to take classes, Jo-Ann's in Canton will be having Open House where many classes will be 50% off on November 7th and December 5th. The classes will be 50% off all day, but if you want to meet teachers, the Open House takes place from 1-3pm. Jo-Ann's is really rolling out the holiday classes this November and December as well, with some really nice projects for people of every skill level. Many of the projects can be completed in-class or with a little additional time, and instructors do what they can to make sure that your questions are answered and your project can be completed. With Lion Brand still sponsoring the beginner knit and crochet classes (free supplies), there's not a better time to learn a new skill, either.
