On Jon Stewart's Daily Show tonight he took some time to criticize Glenn Beck for his claim that America has the "best health care system in the world." Stewart's analysis was hilarious and did reveal some contradiction on the part of Beck who complained about health care just a little over a year earlier. Below are the full versions of the three clips Stewart used to dissect Beck's coverage of the health care system.
What the clips reveal is that Beck is slightly more consistent than Stewart makes out. Beck is exaggerating the greatness of the health care system right now but to his credit he does say in the clip below that while we have the best system it is not a perfect system. Surely Beck's surgery was one of the "not perfect" examples of our system gone wrong.
The real problem I have with Beck's analysis is twofold. First, the only solution he provides to the problems he concedes exist is to "care" more. Really? Does Beck really believe that insurance companies will accept people with pre-existing conditions because we tell them to care? Does Beck really believe millions who are uninsured will get the coverage they need if people just start caring more? Does Beck really think Medicare will not go bankrupt and premiums will stop rising if we all just care more?
I give Beck credit for simplicity. He just turned a 1,000 page health reform bill into a one page sign that says "care more" but Beck's "solution" is not realistic toward solving our problems. In the end Beck is skilled at twisting and misconstruing his opponents' solutions but he lacka any ability to come up with any real solutions himself.
