British boxing is hurting. The amazingly devoted fight fans throughout the UK are in dire need of a new ring hero.

Joe Calzaghe quit in what might prove to be the most well-timed retirement since Marvelous Marvin Hagler packed it in after getting disgracefully robbed against Sugar Ray Leonard.

Ricky Hatton was last seen doing reverse pushups off the canvas and wiping shaved “Manila Ice” off his face after a less than six minute mutilation by Manny Pacquiao.

As for Sir Talkalot, heavyweight David Haye, the jury is out. If he gets past Vitali Klitschko, he will become The Man in UK boxing but we have to wait and see on that one.

Mexican boxing needs a top icon as well. Juan Manuel Marquez is nearing the finish line and Floyd Mayweather Jr. could give him an extra push there. Juan Ma, for all his skills, never had the widespread popularity of real icons named Morales and Barrera.

Republic of the Philippines has two, Pacman and, in the on deck circle, Nonito Donaire.

But the next man of the moment in British fight circles could be, should be Kid Khan.

Amir Khan fights Andreas Kotelnik, who is nothing special, on July 18 in Manchester. Khan, 22, despite a one round KO loss to Colombian shocker Breidis Powell, looks ready for his closeup, for prime time.

The “jockey” for the soft-chinned Khan is another “Pinoy hero,” Coach Freddie Roach.

"Amir is the best prospect in the world right now," Prof. Roach has said.

Sometimes, as in horse racing where the windows wash the people, you bet the horse and other times you bet the jockey.

Coming off my abysmally wrong Dimitrenko over Chambers heavyweight prognostication, I need a winner.

Otherwise, I will have to return Madam Auring’s future telling tools.

I pick Khan to outpoint Kotelnik in Hattontown.

I’m riding with the jockey.

I don’t know if the horse, meaning Khan, is hot or cold. I just know that Roach is en fuego.

Even Madam Auring would not bet against lucky leprechaun Roach right now.

There might be some rough spots but Roach will boot Kid Khan to victory.

If I get this wrong, I’m going to start predicting hockey games. They’re easy.

It’s always so and so, puck or puck and a half.

I never knew Madam Auring was so damn alluring, did you?

A little chunky, yes, but alluring nonetheless.
