For many non-runners, Dean Karnazes is that crazy, good-looking guy who runs megga-distances in far out locations. To the running and endurance athletic community, he’s the ultra marathon man, the guy who ran 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days who has been pushing the boundaries and hasn’t stopped seeking new challenges.
This past week, the ultrarunner and best selling author was in Chicago doing a promotion with Volkswagen, the official automotive sponsor of the 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Karnazes accepted the challenge to run two marathon distances on the same day, back-to-back. That’s a total of 52.4 miles. He took off at 7:30 a.m. with the masses for is first marathon and he finished in 3:52:17. He then turned around and ran another 26.2 miles which he completed in 3:57:28.
On Saturday afternoon, prior to the marathon, Karnazes spoke at the Expo Main Stage to a large audience and concluded with a future goal: In 2012, he wants to run a marathon in every country in the world----including North Korea and Afghanistan. It’s a lofty goal that will involve an incredible amount of logistical planning not to mention diplomatic cooperation, but given what he has accomplished, it’s one he’s capable of tackling.
