In a surprise move by the embattled yet comically maniacal Illinois Governor, Blagojevich has tapped former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris to replace Barack Obama in the Senate.
The move comes as an act of defiance by the Governor who promised to fight till he last breath after being arrested on corruption charges on December 9.
Harry Reid and the Illinois Legislature had threatened to not seat anyone that Blago picked but are faced with a touch decision in this case.
Burris himself is a longtime Illinois politician who, in 1978, became the first African-American to win statewide office when he became State Comptroller. While he was never able to win higher office than Attorney General, failing to win in three Gubernatorial Democratic primaries, Burris, 71, could very well run for re-election in 2010.
While it is a safe pick for the Governor and the assumption is the Burris is "clean," it is a safe bet that after this many years in Illinois politics the man has some skeletons in his closet.
Burris could not yet be reached for comment while Blago has scheduled a 2 p.m. press conference to announce his pick.
Stay tuned for more as soon as we know more.
