You can already download your distance learning classes to your iPhone. But Macworld has found an even better use for the device – picking a mom & pop eatery while traveling. In an article Thursday, the magazine favorably reviewed the “LocalEats” application from the developers of the website www.WhereTheLocalsEat.com
In August, Macworld scrutinized “ Yelp”, a business search app that includes restaurant comments from diners ala Zagat, but with more attitude.
The magazine was a little less happy with “Places” for the iPhone although the reviewer liked that Places uses the iPhone’s locator technology to direct you to an unfamiliar diner or pub. He also liked that the app is free. It will also pull up reviews from Yelp. Places is from http://crimsonjet.com
Google just launched Google Earth for the iPhone Tuesday. The “Search Near Me” allows you to search for your favorite foodstuffs, get restaurant information and locator maps plus terrain using Google Earth. See examples and download a demo from the Google pressroom
“Say Where” is another new, free iPhone application that lets you call up a business or a restaurant plus its location and a Yelp review using voice commands. Don’t know the restaurant name? Say “Chinese restaurant” and the screen pulls up a map with Chinese restaurants in the area. See the reviews at cnet and Wired
