It's an exciting time to cover restaurants, from the half-baked to the well-done. Shelley Owens, a restaurant industry reporter for seven years, examines breaking news and breaking dishes at Examiner.com.
According to the December 2008 American Express Market Brief released this afternoon, 53 percent of consumers reported that they would eat at restaurants more often if their personal economic situation were to improve. Almost three of five (59 percent) said they would also spend more money at restaurants.
Most of the people who said they would spend more fall into younger age groups, according to AMEX. Two-thirds, 67 percent, are between the ages of 18 and 20. Of consumers age 21to 24, 63 percent said they would spend more on restaurant meals if their situation were to improve. Fifty-eight percent of diners age 25 to 34 and 56 percent of diners age 35 to 54 said they would spend more.
Among restaurant patrons 55 to 64, 48 percent said they would spend more. And only 25 percent of consumers above age 65 said their restaurant expenditures would increase if their economic picture brightened.
