eep down in the twisting roads and hidden dales of Fair Play a legend exists.

The legend of the Zin Man.

Often seen on moonlit nights darting between the lush vineyards of Perry Creek Winery holding aloft a wine glass while dancing under a star filled night his mysterious image has been capture to grace the labels of the winery's abundant product line.

Zin Man's playground is the 42 acres of estate vineyards where butterflies flitter, bees buzz and General Manager Stefan Tscheppe considers this nirvana.

As the sixth generation of winemakers, the native of Graz Austria is a man who lives and breaths wine.

"Making drinkable wine is easy to produce," he says.  "Great wines need a soul."

Combined with the vintner's talents of Joe Flemate and Garrett Buckland, Tscheppe. along with owner Dieter Juergens, strives to highlight the delicious complexities found in their award winning Petite Sirah and other reds and whites.

Hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as the best Viognier in the Sierra foothills the '07 has a decisive crispness in citrus acids that holds its own against a chilled meat platter or a Mezza plate of creamy cheeses, a nutty hummus and piquant small green olives.

Bringing the full summer taste of sunshine surging through early ripening fruit the estate bottled Rose is created with a French styling from Syrah grapes.

A tapestry of light textures and colors describes the '07 Muscat Canelli.  Combine the chilled wine's candied fruit and honeyed spice flavorings with fresh cut melons and berries for a nutritious and cooling hot weather aperitif or dessert.

The earthiness and complexities of Perry Creek's reds and their vast versatility to food pairings guarantees a constant spot in many a restaurant's wine list from locally to Mexico City and Tokyo.

Their '06 Sirah sparks with hits of cinnamon, blackberries and a late cooling of vanilla upon the tongue while the melding of superior Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot along with cedar and dried essence of herbs creates the acclaimed Three Hills Red from 2005.

More than just more than just the local community knows Zin Man’s legend. Wine Spectator, the proclaimed holy book of oenophiles worldwide gave Perry Creek's '06 Zinfandel 86 points.

Combining the dark and light flavors of roasted espresso beans with toasted vanilla Zin Man is an instant love object to confirmed Zin devotees and a charming encounter for those previously shy on the wine.

Perry Creek also offers a 2005 Cobra line and promises a great future through their Altitude: 2401 series. The latter’s   Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Zins will be released periodically over the next few months.

Never shy about sharing their bounty and having a good time, the winery’s attentive and knowledgeable staff hosts frequent events like this weekend’s upcoming BBQ on Saturday, June 20th. Commemorating the release of the new Syrah'del the party starts at 12:00 and is complimentary. Reservations are a must. Call the winery, at (530) 620-5175, no later than June 17th to reserve a spot.

Periodically, wine club members are invited to the vineyards to catch sight of the spirited Zin Man as he cavorts joyously under the night sky with raised glass in celebration.

Stefan Tscheppe concurs with Zin Man’s vigorous display of passion.

“If a wine does not dance on one’s palate – why drink it?”
