We have some world-class ensembles and host amazing concerts within the borders of the City of Philadelphia, however there's some great community organizations, orchestras, bands, and more in all of the surrounding suburbs!  I'm on a mission to learn more about these groups and bring my findings to you, the reader!  It's important to support these groups, bring our kids along, tell our friends, and to enjoy this music the way it was intended...live!

I'm obviously not saying that you shouldn't purchase a subscription to our own amazing Philadelphia Orchestra or that you shouldn't go see the latest opera by the Opera Company of Philadelphia.  Of course you should!  What I am saying is that we are lucky to live in a region where the arts are alive and well.  There are colleges, community organizations, high schools, and other groups performing almost daily across the metro-Philly region.  We should all make time in our lives for more music.

That includes me, and I intend to do so.  I hope you join me and will post your thoughts as a reply to any of my articles.  I want to hear from you, and I want you to help me spread the news that music in the Philadelphia region is alive and well.

Take the Delaware County Symphony for example.  This is a group that you might not be aware of.  They rehearse at Neumann College, a small college in Aston, Delaware County.  While they only perform a few times a year, their concerts appear to always be on Sunday afternoons, and a subscription to the orchestra (4 concerts) costs only $50!  The orchestra brings in superb guest musicians such as Jeffrey Lang and baritone Robert McFarland.  What a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than enjoying a great concert by a local orchestra!

If you are in a local orchestra, band, or community musical organization and you are looking for a way to help spread the word about your group and local music in general, please let me know.  It's time for Philadelphians and our friendly neighbors to show our support for the arts by taking action and supporting our local organizations from the local high school all the way up to the Philly O and every group in between!

Coming Next Issue!

Coming later this week I'll unveil our NCAA style bracket of composers.  You, the reader, will have the opportunity to vote on our matchups as we work our way towards our composers Finale Four and ultimately the world champion!

The following teams will be represented:  Germany/Austria, The United States, Great Brittain, France, Russia/Soviet Union, Other European Nations, Italy, and Latin Composers.  It should be a composer battle for the ages, so get ready to vote!
