Rumor has it (as recently reported by Engadget.com) that Garmin will soon be introducing a couple of new Oregon series GPS receivers with built in digital cameras. As you may know, the Oregon series is the latest handheld series of Garmin GPSr. They are quite streamlined, utilize a touch screen and for all you geocachers out there, they allow for paperless geocaching.
So what’s the big deal with a camera in a GPSr? In one word: geotagging. Geotagging is the process of adding GPS coordinate information to the metadata (the hidden data that records information such as exposure, date of capture etc.) of a digital photograph. This is very useful for a variety of purposes. Web sites such as Flickr and Picasa already allow for geotagging and allow you to see on a map where the photographs were taken. Geotagging also makes it easy for you to search your database of photographs by location. Next time you can’t find that picture of the Eiffel Tower just do a search on the coordinates and voila there are all the pictures taken in that vicinity.
While there are some digital cameras available that have the ability to interface with a GPSr there are few GPSr units on the market that incorporate a digital camera. I'm extremely curious to see what the resolution and zoom capabilities of this camera will be, as well as, how user friendly it will be. I believe this product will have a very broad appeal to the geocaching community and beyond.
Being an avid photographer and geocacher, I'm more than a little interested in the potential of this product. I’ll be watching for the release of the new Garmin and will report on it in more detail as soon as possible.
