One of the coolest things about Call of Duty: World at War is the ability to rise through 65 levels, gaining access to different perks and weapons as you progress. While it might be a downer not to have access to all the weapons right at first, it provides great motivation to keep going as you unlock that long-awaited weapon or perk.
And luckily one of the best weapons in the game -- the MP40 submachine gun -- is within easy reach, unlocked at level 10, which is about an evening of playing. While everyone has a different style of play they like, and different weapons are better on different maps, the MP40 can help see you through until you unlock your favorite weapons.
The ability to customize your own class kicks in at level four and you will unlock new weapons and perks from levels 5 to 65. When you first get the ability to create a custom class, these are the weapons and perks you can choose from:
Weapons: Springfield and Arisaka bolt action rifles, SVT-40 rifle, Thompson submachine gun, M1897 Trench Gun, Type 99 and BAR machine guns and the Colt, Nambu and Walther P38 pistols
Grenades: Frag grenade and the N 74 ST sticky grenade
Special Grenades: Smoke grenades, tabun gas and signal flares
Slot 1 Perks: Special Grenade (x3), Satchel Charge (x2), M9A1 Bazooka (x2)
Slot 2 Perks: Stopping Power (more gun damage), Fireworks (more explosive damage), Flak Jacket (less explosive damage), Gas Mask (immunity to Tabun Gas), Juggernaut (more health)
Slot 3 Perks: Deep Impact (more bullet penetration), Extreme Conditioning (sprint longer), Steady Aim (increased accuracy when firing from the hip)
Vehicle Perks: Water Cooler (less turret overheating), Greased Bearings (turret rotates faster)
The following lists out the different perks, weapons and grenades that will be unlocked at their prospective level.
The MP40 combined with the Juggernaut perk is a great beginner weapon for quickly becoming a formidable opponent and racking up some kills to get more experience. Best of all, the MP40 is unlocked early at level 10.
When trying to level up fast, few perks beat a combination of the Martyrdom perk -- unlocked at level 20 -- and the Bouncing Betty perk -- unlocked at level 24. The combination gives you the ability to plant two mines and drop a grenade when you are killed, both of which provide easy kills even to those who are still trying to master the art of precision aiming in an instant.
While Free-for-all matches are great for racking up quick kills in order to unlock weapon modifications like scopes and silencers, the headquarters match is excellent for gaining good experience at a brisk pace. For those skilled at getting the drop on opponents and avoiding flying bullets, search and destroy can be the quickest way to high experience, with 50 experience points given out per kill -- but if you happen to die, you are out until the next round starts.
