A magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred late Thursday night in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region about 35 miles south west of Jalalabad. The moderate, but shallow quake was followed by a 5.1 aftershock about two hours afterward. Over 20 people were killed, dozens injured, and over 200 homes destroyed.
