NASCAR’s aviation division violated several federal regulations and that along with poor record keeping caused a plane crash that killed 5 people in 2007 according to Federal investigators.

According to National Transportation Safety board staff investigators NASCAR allowed the plane to fly without looking into an electrical malfunction reported by a pilot.

NASCAR maintains several aircraft for corporate use.

The plane crashed into a neighborhood in Sanford Florida, just north of Orlando and southwest of NASCAR’s corporate headquarters in Daytona Beach. Two persons on board the aircraft were killed along with one adult and two children on the ground.

The board is expected to vote on an official cause soon. NASCAR has settled with the family’s of those involved.

Late Wednesday NASCAR released the following statement from Ramsey Posten Managing Director, Corporate Communications for NASCAR

"The NTSB finalized its report of the tragic accident that occurred on July 10, 2007. This process was largely about finding ways to make aviation safer and we support that effort. We have worked closely with aviation industry experts to improve our safety management systems so as to prevent an accident like this from occurring in the future. Our thoughts continue to be with those whose lives were affected that day."
