Last Saturday was the 2009 Cruizin' Havana Car Show and Poker Run. I missed the chance to participate in this event last year as my 1972 Cadillac was still in the shop having the finishing touches put on the paint job. This year I wasn't going to be caught missing out on the fun, especially since the last cruise-in event I attended (see Golden Super Cruise) was so much fun. The Cruizin' Havana event was no different; it provided lots of nice people, cars and entertainment across the three miles and five festival sites. In addition, it had the extra added attraction of having a fun event for participants called a "Poker Run".
The Poker Run is something that really sticks out in my mind when I look back on this event. What is a Poker Run? In this case, the Poker Run was an event that you registered for at one of the five festival sites. Then at a specific time (6 p.m.) you went up to the designated tent and picked a playing card out of a shuffled deck. The event staff would then mark your card down on your registration sheet and sign off on it. The next step was to visit the rest of the four festival sites located up and down Havana Street with the goal of trying to put together a top 5 card Poker hand. In the event that you had a really good hand, you could attend the evening prize event and put your hand up against others in the pursuit of winning a 50 Plasma television. For most of us that ended up with so-so hands, we had the opportunity to enter the second chance drawing for a $100 gas card and other prizes.
There were a lot of nice cars roaming up and down Havana even with the rain, which at times could seem like a downpour (especially to those without a roof over their heads). One in particular that really sticks out in my mind was a wonderful 1954 Kaiser Darrin. There are photos below in the attached slideshow, but they don't do this car justice. The Kaiser Darrin is known for its doors that slide forward into the body and for being the first production fiberglass sports car in the United States. With only 400 some odd ever produced, this was truly a remarkable car to have the chance to see in person.
So if you missed this great event, then mark you calendars for next year and roll on over to OnHavanaStreet.com for more event photos and upcoming events along the Havana Street Business District.
