New York City, Graffiti, Chelsea

Of all times to be off on a trip, it's this Sunday. I'll be somewhere in the air between Seattle and Buenos Aires, which means I'll miss Sunday night's Oscar show on ABC. Hugh Jackman is hosting the 81st Annual Academy Awards from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood at 5 PM PST on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009. He's only the second Aussie to do so (Paul Hogan was the other one), and there's plenty of buzz about his upcoming gig. Read a fun feature in The Globe & Mail.

One of my favorite things about movies is reading the credits. But if I miss them, I just go to IMDB, and the first link I click on is Filming Locales. That's where you can find out that the movie set in Seattle was actually filmed in Vancouver; or the New York film cheated a bit by going on location in Toronto.

Here are the past ten winners of Best Picture and where they were filmed. Plus my prediction for what film will take the Oscar this year.

  • 1999: American Beauty. Southern California including Los Angeles, Burbank, Long Beach, Sacramento, Torrance
  • 2000: Gladiator. Ouarzazate, Morocco; Lone Pine, California; Surrey, United Kingdom; Italy; Malta
  • 2001: A Beautiful Mind. New Jersey, New York City, Yonkers
  • 2002: Chicago. Chicago, Toronto
  • 2003: The Lord of the Rings, Return of the Ring. New Zealand
  • 2004: Million Dollar Baby. Hollywood, Burbank, Las Vegas
  • 2005: Crash. Los Angeles, Santa Monica
  • 2006: The Departed. Boston, Brooklyn, New York City
  • 2007: No Country For Old Men. Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Coahuila (Mexico), Texas
  • 2008: Slumdog Millionaire. Agia and Mumbai, India

Elsewhere in Movies: Here's a website titled Top 10 Offbeat Movie Locales. Pictured above is New York City (Chelsea), not so offbeat, but a popular place to shoot films and TV series. Photo by Sue Frause.
