Yesterday’s Obama pep-talk to America’s schoolchildren turned out to be innocuous enough, once the proposed accompanying lesson plans were sanitized, in response to Republican objections. In its aftermath,
however, we are left with still another ‘teaching moment’ about the integrity-deficit of the Democratic Party and its allies. The lesson, of course, comes not from the President, but from Washington Examiner Chief Political Correspondent Byron York. In a column posted yesterday morning in the newspaper’s website, Mr. York reported that back in 1991, when President George H.W. Bush made a similar speech to students, the Democratic-controlled Congress not only condemned it, but carried on an investigation into the matter. According to Mr. York:
“Democrats, then the majority party in Congress, not only denounced Bush's speech -- they also ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate its production and later summoned top Bush administration officials to Capitol Hill for an extensive hearing on the issue.”
Moreover, Mr. York tells us, the Obama-friendly Washington Post newspaper, and the National Education Association joined in the chorus of protest and outrage. They berated the 41st president for spending the exorbitant sum of $26,750.00 to carry out his infamous speech at a time of such great national economic distress. Of course, we never found out how much the Democrat Congress spent in its absurd and fruitless investigation of the matter.
Naturally, with the brazen sort of hypocrisy that has become second-nature to the Democrats, all we hear from them today is soggy-eyed admiration for the President. How much it cost to the taxpayers? Who cares! Will the Congress investigate? Fahgedaboudit!
And the enraged critics of the Bush speech? Let’s see:
It’s no wonder the American people are increasingly distrustful of Obama and the Democrats.
