Earlier this year, Bicycle Colorado was instrumental in getting a “Share the Road” specialty license plate established in the state of Colorado. The Department of Revenue requires that at least 3000 specialty plates must be in circulation at all times in order to keep the plate on the market. Even so, just to get the plate approved, Bicycle Colorado had to collect enough signatures to convince the Department of Revenue that sufficient interest existed to warrant the issuance of the specialty plate.
In order to purchase a Share the Road plate, you must first donate $25.00 to Bicycle Colorado’s Share the Road Education Fund. This $25.00 donation is a one time cost; thereafter the annual plate fee is $50.00, in addition to your normal registration fee.
That seems like a lot of extra money just so you can tout your fanaticism. But I encourage you to consider getting one anyway. For one thing, there are very specific uses that will be made of the one-time $25.00 donation:
• Educate motorists on how to safely share the road
• Educate bicyclists on the rules of the road and safe riding
• Educate event directors and bicyclists on best practices for event safety
• Provide guidance to bicyclists involved in crashes
• Outreach to law enforcement on the rights and responsibilities of motorists and bicyclists
In addition to these specific benefits, there is one more that may be even more important. The more cars, trucks and SUVs there are tooling around with a “Share the Road” message radiating subtly but insistently from the read bumper, the better chance we have to soften some of the hard-core anti-bicycling attitudes that emanate from certain segments of the motoring public.
Support your right to ride safely by acquiring a Share the Road plate when your vehicle renewal comes due.
