The Associated Press (AP) released a story today about drywall imported from China. Apparently, if it's made in China, the United States government will let it in, without pause, without regulation. Even my dog has to have a license, but China seems to do what it pleases.
Is it because we owe the Chinese so much? I hope not people. The way things are going if you look at the numbers, every US citizen, including your newborn baby owes the Chinese government $6,000 a piece. I guess that's why we put up with their imports without regulation or license of any kind.
Builders all over the US purchased gypsum/drywall from more than one Chinese manufacturer; over 500 million pounds of the stuff. I talked to a local builder and he explained that drywall isn't cheap. Too bad people! This bad-China drywall is emitting sulfur compounds so severe that it can turn a shiny copper kettle black and is making people sick; real sick. One man whose son suffered from the contaminants of this drywall has to stay out of his newly built home because his son was so sick with upper respiratory illnesses; the poor kid had to have surgery. Other's are experiencing headaches, sinus problems, and breathing problems.
These people have no avenue to get justice. The builders who put the drywall in are broke or bankrupt and suing the Chinese manufacturers. The banks that mortgaged their homes still want their monthly payments and the US government, moving at its usual slow-turtle pace, says they can't help either. Why not?
If we look at China's track record of imports, we have had bad cough syrup, tainted dog food, and toys that contained lead paint. Not a good record at all but here we go again folks. I am so sick and tired of builders and governments saying, "it's cheaper if we get it from China."
Sure it is because China pays their workers almost nothing to produce the crap they put out. I don't know if there's a drywall union of workers here in the US but most likely there is. If I belonged to this union, I'd tell these builders, cheap is not always better, not if it's going to kill someone. But that always falls on deaf ears folks.
There are so many things in our lives we have to license and regulate but when we want to buy drywall to rebuild houses that fell to Hurricane Katrina, or put up a condo complex the most inexpensive way, who is really saving here? I, for one am sick of China and the imports our government allows. I know we have to at some point realize the economy is a global economy, but you can bet your next paycheck if we were exporting something to China, they'd make sure it was safe. Yes folks, they would indeed.
Most homes infected with the bad-China drywall were built or renovated from 2004 to 2008 and are all over the country. What's scary is that homes that are located in dryer climates may not see the effect of the bad-China drywall for quite some time. So, if you've got headaches and your copper pots are turning black, don't expect any help from Uncle Sam, after all, the White House was built a long time ago so everyone who lives there is pretty much safe.
