They say good artists borrow & great artists steal, but in the case of Britney Spears' comeback Circus tour that might only be half true - the stealing part, not the great artist bit.
Turns out that for all the effort and all the hype, the formerly troubled Pop Princess hasn't really got it altogether for her North American and European tour. Unless, you count getting it together as blatant lip-syncing, barely acknowledging the audience and raiding Madonna's closet.
The critics' were mixed in their reviews of Britney Spears and the New Orleans kick off show for what is supposed to be her return to center stage.
People magazine cut straight to chase, saying, "don't call it a comeback quite yet."
The bestthe Los Angeles Times could say of the Cirque du Soleil-like show was that Britney "renewed her claim as one of the world’s most adept manipulators of the public interest."
They were a bit kinder in the Big Easy itself to their native Louisianan, The New Orleans Times-Picayune wrote online that Britney was "fully focused on executing the complex concert. And execute she did.” Sounds and smells more like George W. Bush, that great friend of the city of New Orleans, and "Mission Accomplished."
One of the most nauseating aspects of Britney's new show is how desperately she is trying to rip off Madonna. From onstage kisses at the MTV Awards to onstage visits the last time Madonna played Los Angeles, Britney Spears has never made any secret how much she idolizes the Material Girl. Yet, you have to give Madonna this, as much as she grafts from Gay and Dance culture, the 50-year old singer is relentless in her construction of the semblance of professionalism and originality, even if she is all the later and so little of the former.

Britney Spears, as these shots from last night's show in New Orleans reveal, is neither. For one, a few more sit-ups might be in order.

Secondly, c'mon, that's the best you can do? Stealing Madonna's look isn't flattery, it's desperate.
Oh yeah, sorry, I forgot, Britney Spears, who heads to Atlanta next on her tour, is desperate ... desperately seeking more celebrity.
