At the time I was caught up in the moment, enjoyed reading a positive news story for once and while following the Ashton Kutcher versus CNN Twitter race I was taking a break from reality. However, I have hit my saturation point after reading Ashton Kutcher's nearly romantic article about the founders of Twitter (Biz Stone, Evan Williams, Jack Dorsey) on
Time 100, their annual list of The World's Most Influential People.
Saying that, "Twitter is a stage for humanity and connection, not the triumph of technology" was not a bad statement by Kutcher, even though the word "humanity" seems to be overused by the "artistic" kind. Expressing how Twitter helps Kutcher express himself and access "cultural trends, opinions and information" actually made some sense due to his level of celebrity, which I assume can be rather isolating at times. However, stating that the founders of Twitter will be marked in history along the names of Samuel Morse, Alexander Graham Bell, Guglielmo Marconi and Bill Gates is rather far stretching if not a bit ridiculous. Continuing to say that, "the creation of Twitter is as significant and paradigm-shifting as the invention of Morse code, the telephone, radio, television or the personal computer" is just embarrassing for Kutcher, Twitter and anyone else that might share the article to a friend by clicking on the Yahoo! Buzz button.
Yes, I understand that Twitter is very popular and the enjoyment that people receive from utilizing the website seems to be immense. I also understand that Kutcher himself has had a very unique experience with Twitter, one that is clearing touching him in a highly spirited and emotional fashion, which is great. But come on, linking Twitter and its founders alongside some of the greatest inventors and technological visionaries in modern history is a little over the top. Twitter's involvement in Time 100 makes it appear that
Time.com was looking to exploit Kutcher to gain extra readership from a much younger cohort more than anything else.
Leading up to Kutcher's Time 100 article was
President Barack Obama being profiled by Gordon Brown, directly following Kutcher's article was Ted Turner profiling
T. Boone Pickens. Mmmm, the President of the United States of America, a three year old Internet startup company that is generating zero revenue while managing the largest online popularity constant and an environmental crusader that is probably one of America's most legendary Texas oil and gas executives. In my opinion the Twitter article is completely out of place and shouldn't have been include anywhere in Time 100. With a little bit more thought and effort and a little less focus on easy word-of-mouth publicity I am sure
Time.com could have located at least one additional person to take Twitter's spot. Maybe next year. Just make sure Twitter doesn't take over your life, (Note: See video below).
Oh, also I am just kidding about the title of the article. Ashton Kutcher has not divorced Demi Moore nor has he married Twitter. That was said as a joke so relax, and yes I am on Twitter and use the website myself, I just don't have very many followers :-)
