Last year, it seemed every other wedding we did, the couple chose to have a cupcake tower in lieu of the traditional wedding cake. This trend that I can track back to 2006 (maybe even earlier, but that’s when I first noticed it) has gained in popularity over the last couple of years and it may now be why I can say of cupcake bakeries in DC what has been said of wedding planners in DC: you cannot throw a shoe without hitting one. Like this one I visited last week (and let me now say the cream cheese frosting on the red velvet cupcake at Red Velvet Cupcakery is worth the extra calories). However, at an average of $3.00 - $4.00 a cupcake, the savings on the cupcake tower versus the traditional wedding cake are not significant, so the decision to have one is more a matter of personal style.
Beware the wedding guests?
It used to be, the biggest caveat to a cupcake tower on a dessert buffet (another trend usually done in conjunction with the cupcake tower) was that guests sometimes ate the wedding cake before it was cut. Fortunately, today’s wedding guests are far savvier as the cupcake tower is now popular at grown-up birthday parties, bridal showers, baby showers and the like, so fear not.
