As a part of Tornado Awareness Month, the Jackson Weather Examiner will review severe storms that affected the state throughout the month of November.
On this date -November 11th:
In 1995, Widespread damaging winds and a few tornadoes swept across the state from 1 am to 6 am, producing damage in many counties, especially across Central and portions of Eastern Mississippi, injuring 4 people.
A 200 yards wide, F-3 tornado began at (310 am), five miles west-southwest of Flora and tracked in an easterly direction for up to 15 miles before lifting five miles southwest of Canton at around (330 am). Three mobile homes were totally destroyed. A two story house was almost totally destroyed and two of the occupants were injured. A pickup truck in front of this house was picked up and hurled into a lake nearly 100 yards behind the house. At least five houses had roof damage. Two houses under construction were leveled. Numerous trees, fences, and small buildings were blown down along the path of the tornado. (Madison County)
A 400 yards wide, F-3 tornado started at (455 am) one mile south of Mount Olive and tracked east for up to 7 miles before lifting two miles northeast of Smith at (505 am). Seven homes were severely damaged or destroyed. There were an unknown number of houses with at least some damage. Three mobile homes were destroyed. Three metal buildings were severely damaged. Numerous cars were totaled or severely damaged. Numerous trees were blown down along the path. Four chicken houses were demolished and nearly 20,000 chickens perished. The two injuries occurred in one of the mobile homes. (Covington County)
