JT + TA +J&M L = WR: What do you get when you mix pop superstar, Justin Timberlake; his best bud Trace Ayala and Johan & Marcella Lindeberg of J. Lindeberg fame? You get William Rast, the label that has edgy appeal and southern charm. As a combo of Timberlake and Ayala’s grandfathers’ names, the label (showing for the very first time in the tents mind you) prides itself on its denim as well as its ability to translate Southern style into something suitable for urban fashion mavens.
Hipster hoedown: Building on their foundation of denim imprinted with a “V” on the back pockets of their jeans, William Rast serves up men’s and womenswear on a plate like barbeque at a haute restaurant serving the best baby back ribs with a side of truffle oil infused creamed corn. With subtle hints of fringe and studded denim jackets, the Southern influence is in full effect y’all!
The color of Southern hospitality: There seems to be an aversion to color in the collection as garments in blacks and grays ran rampant. Then again, you can never go wrong with black.
Shapes and silhouettes: Double and single breasted blazers were paired with slim and barely baggy jeans for the guys and women square danced down the runway in casual garb that featured shoulder padded shirts, skirts and jeans.
All-American and chic: Denim is always a good thing. Altered and used in various ways, the collection was wearable, realistic and had considerable detail.
What I didn’t like: Besides being on the verge of denim overload there is one thing I could've done without - three words: Acid. Washed. Jeans. And it wouldn't have hurt if there was some color.
Overall critique: A valiant effort that holds their own against other urban sportswear labels. They play it safe, but push the envelope in baby steps. All in all, the menswear was more appealing than the womenswear (except for the acid wash - I couldn't get oer that). Even though it wasn’t necessarily groundbreaking, it was like watching the wardrobe of a stylish Southern boy and girl who were plucked out of Tennessee and plopped into the gritty streets of the city.
