The first issue of Academy of Art University's  one eighty
fashion, arts and culutre magazine.

It seems that the Academy of Art University is gonna take their fashion school domination to the next level with their upcoming glossy fashion mag called one eighty.

Okay, okay – this may be a little bit of shameless self-promotion considering I am a teacher at the school and I am on the masthead of the magazine as “Editor-at-Large” – but it really is a good magazine – and I’m not just saying that because I helped out with it (okay, maybe just a little bit).

Nearly everything in the magazine is shot, created and written by students of the university and it is the first of its kind from any arts school – pretty snazzy huh?

The premier issue includes everything cool you need to know about in fashion, art, photography and lifestyle: a story on Michael Fink, Saks Fifth Avenue VP of Women’s Fashion, a photoshoot with  the Creeps, a scooter gang in San Francisco, styled by AAU students, fancy fashion spreads with collections from alumni such as Sara Shepherd, Justin Kennedy, Quyen Nguyen, Alice Yim and two recent graduates, Ronnie Escalante and Alyssa Prentice (who are currently under the tutelage of Ralph Rucci in NY).

Michael Fink does a makeover with one eighty!

Going beyond fashion, the issue includes an interview with Bay Area hip-hop group, Infinity Funk Project, a story on Gus Van Sant’s upcoming Harvey Milk biopic, Milk and an in-depth conversation about texting with the stars from the documentary, American Teen.

The Bay Area's own Infinity Funk Project, featured in the first issue of one eighty

Overseen by the school’s fashion journalism coordinator, Cheryl Locke (a former editor for Elle.com and InStyle magazine – not to mention my boss) design instructor, Jonathan Kyle Farmer, the magazine will be released twice a year (for now) to coincide with the university’s two fashion shows they have each year: the graduation and awards ceremony in April and the September graduate show at the tents during Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.

That said, the magazine will make its debut this Friday as the attendees of this years show (including yours truly who will be there autographing copies of the inaugural issue) will be treated to the mag. In addition, 10,000 copies of one eighty will be distributed at all the coolest and hippest galleries, cafes, museums, and bookstores throughout San Francisco.

So go out and get one! Tell them Dino-Ray sent you.
