In UFO on the moon in Apollo Days? You decide I posted a photograph that is alleged to be an official NASA photograph showing a UFO observing activities of Apollo 14 in 1971.
I had searched the NASA GRIN (Great Images in NASA) database for both numbers assigned to the photo, as well as performing a web search. I was unable to find any photo online with those numbers, although they are apparently NASA sequence numbers.
Of course, not all NASA photos may be online. So I dug a little deeper.
Shown above is an authentic NASA Apollo 14 image (#AS14-66-9306). Look at the lower right--see the bursts of color? Another UFO photo?
Nope.
It shows Antares on the Frau Mauro Highlands on Feb. 5, 1971. And here's the explanation NASA provided:
A front view of the Apollo 14 Lunar Module "Antares", which reflects a circular flare caused by the brilliant sun. The unusual ball of light was said by the astronauts to have a jewel-like appearance. At extreme left, the lower slope of Cone Crater can be seen.
For good measure, I found another Apollo 14 photo with lights nearby. This is #AS14-67-9367. cropped to accent the lights in the right corner.

UFO encounter? Nope. NASA records state:
The Apollo 14 Lunar Module (LM) "Antares" is photographed against a brilliant sun glare during the first extravehicular activity (EVA-1)
Do these two pictures, both with "UFO-shaped" lights that are explained, debunk the prior claim? I think so.
But, others disagree. At Above Top Secret, a discussion thread yielded this:
According to Ken Johnston, former LRL manager of NASA’s photographic lunar archive in the early 1970’s, he gave a first-hand account of how he was specifically instructed by his NASA managers toward the end of the Apollo Program to destroy unique Apollo records.
Here's a link to Ken Johnston's biography and a blog for Dark Mission - The Secret History of NASA by Richard C. Hoagland and Mike Bara. (Which I haven't yet read but intend to.)
Obviously, there are people who believe that NASA is deliberately hiding and/or destroying records of contacts with UFOs and aliens. Others disagree, and that's made for some passionate discussions.
However, I think that the two photos shown here pretty well debunk the first Apollo 14 photo I posted earlier today. But that's just one opinion.
What do you think?
