Romantic travelers everywhere breathed a sigh today - of relief, that is - when a middle-aged couple arrested in Dubai for having sex on the beach were given suspended jail sentences and allowed to return home. And if you're thinking, "What were they thinking having sex on the beach in broad daylight?", the pair were actually arrested after midnight, when the effect on public morals was presumably a bit less powerful.

Dubai is actively courting foreign tourists, most recently with the dazzling opening of the new Atlantis Resort and Theme Park, where hundreds of international luminaries partied the night away, including guest Sir Richard Branson. Wonder if the billionaire, who has described some of his own sexual adventures in his autobiographies, put in a good word for his fellow passionate Brits?
