I'm a big fan of Modest Mouse's frontman Isaac Brock, and am also quite fond of the Toronto collective Broken Social Scene. You can only imagine everyone's excitement when Brock unexpectedly showed up at Broken Social Scene's show at the Sound Academy in Toronto and performed the fantastic song "The World at Large" off Modest Mouse's 2004 release, Good News for People Who Love Bad News.
Isaac Brock and Broken Social Scene have both done incredible things for the independent music scene. Besides Modest Mouse, and Brock's great side project, Ugly Casanova, he did A&R for Sub Pop, and is responsible for connecting bands like the Shins, Iron & Wine, Wolf Parade, and Holopaw with the label. If it wasn't for him, some of your favorite musicians might have gone unheard. Broken Social Scene, on the other hand, has fostered the likes of Feist, Stars, Metric's Emily Haines, and other acclaimed musicians who have all been part of the collective. Enjoy.

I feel like music videos and studio sessions being produced today are as creative as ever. One relatively new phenomenon I see is bands playing their instruments in public places they wouldn't typically perform, such as city buses, marketplaces, and... Read More Topics:

It's been an interesting week in Beatles land. First, somebody finally figured out how The Beatles played the mysterious first chord in "A Hard Days Night." Then a document surfaced that Paul McCartney sent to a fan nearly 20 years ago, which... Read More Topics:

A year ago, Bon Iver's debut album, For Emma Forever Ago, was the only album I could listen to. It was one of the most beautiful albums I'd ever heard, and I was fixated with Justin Vernon's falsetto and guitar playing. The album received critical... Read More Topics:
