In anticipation for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, yesterday we talked about a quote from Stephenie Meyer's New Moon and its significance in the context of the story (see here). As requested, you all submitted some fantastic quotes to add to the list.
Given the prolific submissions, it was too difficult to settle on just one (isn't the breadth of wondrous quotes available why we love the Twilight series to start with?) and leave the rest behind, so some are featured in the slide show below.
However, as promised, one has been chosen that just stood out in the context.
It is from "Inez," who submitted the following by Bella in Chapter 1, page four.
I didn’t have to look to know who it was; this was a voice I would know anywhere—know, and respond to, whether I was awake or asleep… or even dead, I’d bet. The voice I’d walk through fire for—or, less dramatically, slosh every day through the cold and endless rain for. Edward.
While yesterday's quote was from the end of New Moon, today's is from the very beginning.
This quote is very significant because it brings us up to speed on how deep Bella is in by the time New Moon (and the new school year) comes around.
Not only is Bella still "irrevocably" in love with Edward, but she is so in tune with that emotion that we are sucked right back in - from the first few pages - to that undeniable passion and love.
It is also significant because it reintroduces us to some of the reality of Bella's voice. Particularly, it is a reminder of Bella's surroundings (sloshing rain) and her pretenses about them (i.e., she may love Forks because of Edward, but she still isn't a fan of the wet and cold).
Finally, it reminds us of the beauty of Stephenie Meyer's writing. The ability to couple such intensely raw emotional description with a snarky (and a tad cynical) undertone is a feat not matched by many writers.
[Be sure to leave your suggestions for tomorrow's article, as a quote will be drawn from the list of suggestions contained in the comments below (and the format will continue in this way until November). Be sure to leave the chapter/page information on the quote that you submit, and your name in the box so that you can be credited for your submission!]
