Will the Mast Clear the Golden Gate Bridge?

October 9, 9:11 AM
by Kayla Schober, Seattle Boating Examiner

For just over 168 million you can purchase one of the most technologically advanced sailing yachts in the world. Your money will buy you the Maltese Falcon a 289 foot yacht with three free standing rotating carbon fiber 191 foot masts. These 3 masts consist of 5 square sails each. The total sail area is over 25,800 square feet more than 3 America’s cup boats with all their sail combined.

Currently the Maltese Falcon is owned by Tom Perkins, a venture capitalist.   The boat completed it sea trials in June 2006. Since then it has sailed all over the world and came to San Francisco bay for the first time on Saturday. Greeting the boats were 100’s of boats on the bay to see it in person as it went under the Golden Gate Bridge. At low tide it cleared the bridge with 20 feet to spare.

The sails were built using the Dyna Rig system. It is an automated system which controls the sails with a push of the button. The boat is able to tack within minutes. While in the harbor on Saturday it gave a horn blast before tacking so it could alert all the other boats around it.   It made all the other sailing vessels around it look like mere toy boats on the bay.

The boat weighs over 2.6 million pounds and is 42 feet wide. It has a crew of about 20 and for 12 guests. It has two 30’ Rib tenders and four Laser sailboats on board.

Perkins won’t say how much the Maltese Falcon cost to build but has said it was over 150 million and less than 300 million. If the current purchase price of 168+ million is out of reach it can be chartered for 550,218 per week though you will need to bring your own wine.
