McG lays down some McFu on the T4 set

You know I wanted to start this news bit off commenting on the "polarizing" (movie people adore that word - not me though, I adore adore) effect of McG's Terminator Salvation with film critics and the geek fanboy base - then I looked at the numbers. Sure the movie made its money back - plus an extra 170 million bucks - but the reviews for the film were absolutely bloodthirsty.

Just check out Rottentomatoes where T4 is clutching at a piddly 32% fresh rating. That's not polarizing. That's Little Big Horn and McG's the pale-skinned guy with the long golden locks, the horseshoe stache', and about three thousand guns shy of having a good day...

I loved the movie - but what the hell do I know? I'm a bear, I suck the heads off of fish...

I'm a bi-product of the 80's man. Just like George W. Bush, electroclash, and as it happens, Terminator 4. That's the reason so precious few of us doing this dirty work actually liked the flick. It had a retro vibe I wasn't expecting. What was I expecting? With McG's name in my head I had visions of John Connor floating crane-style across the horizon roto-kicking Skynet sentries into submission. What I got was much more in the vein of the Road Warrior -  so hell yeah I loved it. Loved it so much I even said this in the final paragraph of the review: "If McG wants to take up another sequel for this new generation of Terminator films.... I'll be back."

Guess what? He'll be back.

IESB.Net did a terrific interview with McG about his upcoming projects. Here's what he had to say about Terminator 5:

IESB: Do you want to take time off between Terminator films?

McG: It's interesting. Obviously, Michael Bay had tremendous success following Transformers, in a very short window. Sometimes people like to take time off, but I'm excited about the next installation of the story, in the Terminator idea. So, for me, it's terribly exciting to get back out there and show a different face of that idea, and perhaps get out of the apocalyptic world and into a contemporary world. I think the audience is going to be very excited about our way in. I haven't talked to anybody about that yet. You're the first one.

IESB: Do you listen to fan criticism, or is that just too much information?

McG: No, I listen to everything. It's interesting because a lot of people don't like me, but a lot of people just don't like my name. I can't take that too seriously because that's been my name my whole life. It's not something that I prescribed myself. So, I just gotta roll forward and, hopefully, have the films do the talking. You take your lumps, if they don't like it, and you enjoy it a lot more when they do. We've all been on every side of that, and what can you do, but figure out what you did right and what you did wrong, look at it a little more closely, study the people that you look up to, and continue to evolve as a storyteller.

Which is interesting because in thinking back to my initial hesitation over this new Terminator direction it was pretty much 90% the dude's name mixed in with 10% James Cameron commemoration.

I think T4 will always take its licks for the Christian Bale cinematographer Tee-Off, the Christian Bale "Batman Bark" finding its way into John Connor's throat, and the general lack of Christian Bale in the film altogether. Though I didn't mind Sam Worthington stealing this movie I'm sure there were lots of John Connor junkies who couldn't get their fix with this flick. Which is understandable. These are his movies after all. Maybe he'll make more noise in the next film.

No word yet on when McTerminator 2 will be heading off into apocalyptic production or if that f*#@%*$ moron-cinematographer-piece-of-motherf*&%^@#-garbage will be allowed within 90 miles of this new production... I'll keep you posted.
