10 movie sequels that need to be made

October 10, 9:57 AM
by Jason Roestel, Movie Examiner

Some of the best movies are sequels, (Empire Strikes Back, Toy Story 2) then again some of the worst are as well. (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Highlander 2: The Quickening) I thought I'd pick ten films that, for whatever reason, never got the sequel they so rightly deserved. I'm not going to get obvious with this list, (James Bond) or ludicrous, (United 93 Part II: Fly Harder) just relevent. Let's go.

10) Unbreakable- If M. Knight Shyamalan ever needed to get back into good graces with his audience that time is now. Knight needs a hit and his 2000 comic book flick Unbreakable needs a sequel. There are some minor rumors fluttering around about a follow-up, but nothing major. Bruce Willis and Sam Jackson are still fit enough to do another movie.

9) The Incredibles- Brad Bird seems to be making plans to make every other movie available to him except a sequel to his best film ever. Maybe even best animated film ever. I was amused by Ratatouille, but I loved The Incredibles. Superhero movies need sequels, it's wired into their programming. C'mon Bird, we're getting another Toy Story, give us The Incredibles II!

8) Cobra- Wah? Hey man, Stallone's on a role. We might have chuckled when we heard Rocky VI was in production. Laughed alot harder when we heard Rambo IV was in production. After seeing those two films I'm not giggling anymore, in fact I'm ready for the further adventures of Marion Cobretti, super cop and chief assassin of L.A. county's "Zombie Squad". I think a new Cobra flick is just what this country needs. If it's not in the cards then at least give us Over the Top II...

7) Unleashed- I might get loads of hate mail for saying this, but other than Fist of Legend this is my favorite Jet Li movie. Maybe this time we could ditch the weird thirty-year-old teenage daughter, (Kerry Condon in braces) and blind surrogate father, (Morgan Freeman) and just have Danny return to the loving care of Bob Hoskins. Pit fighting, and beating anyone into a bloody mess who owes Bob money. But only if Luc Besson writes the film and Louis Leterrier directs and Jet Li takes the collar off...

6) Reign of Fire- Was I the only one in the world who thought 2002's Reign of Fire kicked total ass? Maybe, my ass-kicking compass has been off before. Christian Bale, Matthew McConaughey, and a pre-300 Gerard Butler all in the same movie together? Yes it happened. And it could happen again, maybe not with McConaughey and Butler but Christian's career has taken off since this film was released, and the world could use one more killer dragon flick. The actuality of this happening is hovering just below 0%. Reign of Fire wasn't a flop at the box-office, but it wasn't a hit either...

5) Trainspotting- One of my favorite films ever. The only reason it's on this list is because Irvine Welsh wrote it's sequel Porno back in 2002. Danny Boyle has flirted about a bit in the press about making a sequel. Since the novel is set a decade after the events in Trainspotting I'm guessing they're waiting for the original actors to "age" a bit more.

4) Hot Fuzz- This is pretty much an automatic. Since Nic Frost's Danny Butterman did nothing but talk about Bad Boys and Bad Boys II in the original Hot Fuzz it's only natural that Hot Fuzz II should be in the works. We need the further, slam-bang, explosive adventures of the world's greatest police officer Nicholas Angel. No, this one goes beyond need... We demand it.

3) Mad Max- Mad Max fans remember the big tease of Mad Max IV: Fury Road a few years back. Mel Gibson was returning as Max Rockatansky. Robert Downey Jr. had been cast. And George Miller had the production ready to roll in South Africa. Then civil war broke out in the country, Miller packed up the crew and dropped the film. No offense to the citizens of Namibia, but couldn't you guys have waited three or four months to overthrow your government? All jesting aside, will we ever see a fourth Mad Max film? Mel Gibson isn't getting any younger, or popular in his age...

2) Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World- Peter Weir's been on vacation since making this film back in 2003. I'm sure anyone who decided to shoot a historical epic, on the open ocean, might need a six or seven year furlough from film making. Still I think the subject is ripe for a film sequel. There are 20 novels in the Aunbrey-Maturin series of novels by Patrick O'Brian. And Russell Crowe is only getting better as an actor. There have been some minor whispers of this project, I know Crowe's enthusiastice about the idea. Now if only he could grab Peter Weir and put him in a full nelson until he agrees to make the film...

1) Willow- Wouldn't this be a great! Ron Howard has become a more serious director since 1988. Which means that a Willow sequel could be a bit more edgy and dramatic. I doubt Val Kilmer's ex-wife Joanne Whalley might want to sign up for a sequel. But if both Kilmer and Warwick Davis returned, I doubt anyone would miss her. Up until 2001's Lord of the Rings movies this was the fantasy film to beat. I'm suprised Ron Howard didn't walk away from Jackson's amazing trilogy with this idea rolling around inside his bald little head. Willow II under the supervision of Jackson's Weta Workshop.... I'm being cruel to myself. It'll never happen. But a dude can hope can't he? And if it did happen, please Ron Howard no Brownies this time.
