The Octumom, Nadya Suleman, has successfully remained in the headlines, after having octuplets to add to her existing brood of six children. The unemployed, single mother apparently plans to care for her children by capitalizing on the media frenzy surrounding her bizarre decision making and behavior. After accepting the offer of round the clock care for her children, only to fire the volunteer staff. Dr. Phil, was instrumental in arranging the care for the children, so today the Dr. Phil Show addressed the breakdown between Suleman and Angels in Waiting.

Dr. Phil said his goal has always been that there be qualified care and ongoing transparency. He said that he felt from the beginning that Suleman’s behavior and decision to have more children when she already had six was reckless, irresponsible and selfish. Although there have been people who have asked why the children have not been taken away, Dr. Phil said there has been no documentation to support that.

Nadya Suleman

Nadya Suleman was not on the Dr. Phil Show, but she was interviewed over the phone on the show. Suleman talked rapidly and didn’t even sound entirely rational in her response; although there is no doubt that she believes what she is saying.

Suleman thanked Angels in Waiting for their help in organization and getting on right track. She has hired her own nannies from Kaiser Permanente and felt the services were no longer needed. She said she was uncomfortable with having the people in her home and said there was negative energy in the home from Angels in Waiting

According to Suleman, the primary issue was that she felt like she was a stranger in her own home. She felt that as the mother she needed to be empowered, not handicapped.

When Suleman brought home the first two of the Octuplets there was chaotic media frenzy, causing a nurse for Angels in Waiting to complain to officials at Children’s Protection Services about unsafe and unsanitary conditions in the Suleman home caused by the number of people within and surrounding the home.

Attorney Gloria Allred representing Angels in Waiting

Angels in Waiting made disturbing allegations regarding conditions in the Suleman home. Gloria Allred made a statement that the priority was the safety and care of the babies. Angels in waiting made not one, but three reports to Children’s Protection Services

1.      Mayhem inside and outside of the house when the first two children were brought home created dangerous conditions.

2.      Concern that children were at high risk for abduction because of the amount of media attention and that people around the world knew where the babies were and the layout of the house.

3.      Concerns that nannies for Kaiser were showing up with positive TB tests and that Nadya was allowing the three nannies that tested positive were in the home with Nadya’s permission.

According to one of the Angel’s in Waiting nurses that was in the home for a week, “The only time that woman ever volunteered to feed her children was when a camera was in the house. “ The volunteer went on to say the Suleman spent her days out shopping and was rarely in the home. She stated that her opinion, based on watching Suleman’s behavior, was that Suleman did not care.

The nurse said she was there to train Nadya, but that Nadya rarely came around. The nurses monitor the involvement of the parents in caring for premature babies in every home they work in and they were of the opinion that Nadya was not that caring of a parent.

According to Gloria Allred, Nadya’s attorney Jeff Czech,  violated the intended transparency of the home care arrangement with Angels in Waiting by asking each of the nurses to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Nadya Suleman’s attorney, Jeff Czech, was also on the show. His contribution was mainly to talk over people and tell them that what they said was not true.

Dr. Phil stated that he has instructed his staff to withdraw from the situation, but is having this show to explain what is going on. Today’s Dr. Phil Show was to attempt to explain the breakdown between Suleman and Angels in Waiting.

Tomorrow there will be another Dr. Phil Show to continue today’s discussion, after which he with withdraw from the situation.
