Filipino inmates who paid a dance tribute to deceased King of Pop Michael Jackson shot to fame with a YouTube video Thriller performed on Saturday in Cebu, Philippines. There were 1,500 inmates at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center in the exercise yard. The inmates practiced for nine hours for the performance that was given to a live audience of about 900 people, according to an Associated Press article by Teresa Cerojano and a report on CNN News.
The inmates performed Michael Jackson hits Thriller, I’ll Be There and We Are the World. They then held up a 5 x 10 foot tarpaulin showing a picture of Michael Jackson holding a sword.
The inmates’ Thriller video was produced in 2007 and has attracted 24.3 million hits in the two years since it has been posted.
The prison added synchronized dancing to the exercise sessions because the regular sessions were poorly attended. The dance performances reportedly help the inmates with self esteem and provide exercise.
