Dear Annie, I have been single and looking, yet my dating life has been going nowhere for more time than I’d like to admit. I’ve been thinking that I’m just not meeting the right people, or that men my age (I’m 43) are losers. Yet, some of my friends are getting into good relationships. I’m thinking about seeing a dating coach What should I consider when I make this decision, and what should I expect? Beverly
Dear Beverly, A coach will take a look at your dating history, help you to evaluate what is working, and guide you as you gradually modify whatever is blocking your success. He or she will help you to keep your dating goals on the front to middle burner, so that you can focus what it takes to get the love you deserve. Here are some of the things to expect:
* Your coach will support you as you establish new, positive dating habits that really work. You’ll avoid destructive, go-nowhere patterns before you waste time and emotional energy on another dead-end romance.
*You’ll gain understanding of how the opposite sex really thinks about different dating situations.
*You’ll master new ways and places to encounter other singles, and become confident flirting in-person and online.
*You’ll learn how to make the most of online dating. You’ll save money on dating media, books, products or services that won’t benefit you.
*Many coaching packages offer image consulting designed to enhance your appeal.
A coach won’t dwell on your past. She or he will help you as you move towards a new future.
How do you know if a dating coach is qualified? Since California has no formal coaching accreditation, it helps to do some detective work. Has he or she trained with a coaching institute or an established coach? Has he or she written a blog, book or column? Read it, and ask yourself if you’d like more information from that person. Is the coach known in the dating community—does he or she speak to groups or participate in dating forums? Another way to experience the coach’s style is to take a group class or low cost service to see if you work well with him or her.
A good dating coach will show you to recalibrate your signals, and help you avoid behavior that will cause unneeded difficulty with prospective partners. If serendipity is not working for you, coaching is a great next step.
