Bleu Boheme, located in the Kensington area of San Diego, is a glance into the past traditions of French cuisine and culture. The founder Philippe Beltran has combined the bohemian, or rural areas, of French flavor with the left bank area of Paris.
Bleu Boheme is a comfortable Euro-American design with soft touches from candles, exposed stonewalls, and wooden wine racks reaching for the ceiling. The feeling of the restaurant is one of a Parisian bistro, elegant yet earthy, sophisticated yet approachable.
The house specialties include mussels and steak fritas. I had the Tarte Chaude au Reblochon as a starter, a light flaky pastry with bacon, onion and melted reblochon savoie sauce. This particular first course included a small salad too. It was more than enough for two people to share. I also sampled the Supreme de Poulet Farci au Chevre with Provencal Sauce, free-range chicken breast stuffed with goat cheese. My main course was one of the nightly specials, poached salmon – delicious! The recommendation for dessert was La Pyramide d’Opera, Glace au Caramel or a pyramid shaped pastry made of carmel and dark chocolate mousse with a crispy hazelnut bottom served with caramel ice cream! If you love chocolate and caramel this is a must have dessert.
The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. As I sputtered through the menu, with my very limited French, I wasn’t sure what to order. I asked for help and never felt any less for it. The wait staff recommended some fabulous choices while making me feel at home. There’s no need to speak or understand the French language here, just enjoy the ambiance and good food.
Most of the wine served at Bleu Boheme is French, with the exception of one page dedicated to California wines. The staff made a great wine recommendation, a nice French white wine, that paired well with with my main course and it was perfect!
One lovely aspect of Bleu Boheme is the large bar at the entrance to the restaurant. This is the perfect place to come and enjoy a glass of wine and sample some of the appetizers or dessert. There’s no pressure to come and have an entire meal.
If you’re looking for a little French flair, Bleu Boheme will take you to the left bank of Paris on a culinary trip. I recommend a reservation as the place can be filled to capacity quickly. Bleu Boheme is an intimate dining experience and one you’ll find surprisingly wonderful.
