What a big win. The Cowboys were supposed to lose until Tony Romo’s return, but they stole an ugly one against the Buccaneers. Ugly never looked so good.

No one is certain what exactly Wade Phillips is doing with the defense, but the squad got its groove back one week after Jerry Jones made it known he wanted Phillips to get more involved on that side of the ball. Coincidence? Surely not.

Brad Johnson won for the first time as a starter since 2006, but it remains to be seen whether or not he’s the guy to lead the team in Romo’s absence. The offense only gained 172 yards, and they scored only one touchdown. Every player with multiple receptions averaged less than 8 yards per catch, confirming the Brad really is “Check-down” Johnson. But the old vet didn’t throw any interceptions, and his 57.6 completion percentage was just good enough.

The win keeps Dallas from falling back to the NFC East basement with Philadelphia, but there’s a lot of football still to be played and reaching the playoffs isn’t the forgone conclusion we all once thought it was.

That’s why this ugly win was so big.
