Alaska governor Sarah Palin expressed shock over President Obama’s remark about Special Olympics. The president appeared on the Tonight Show last Thursday and told Jay Leno that his low bowling score was “like Special Olympics, or something.” The president recognized his failed attempt at self-deprecating humor and immediately responded with an apology to Special Olympics chairman Tim Shriver before the show even aired. However, before you could say “opportunist,” the former Vice-Presidential candidate and mother of a special needs child criticized the president’s comment. She chided, “this was a degrading remark about our world’s most precious and unique people, coming from the most powerful position in the world.”
The president’s remark was indeed thoughtless but Sarah Palin’s indignation rings hollow. She returned to work just three days after giving birth to her son Trig, who was born with Down Syndrome. Yes, special needs children are precious. As such, I would think a newborn Down Syndrome baby would need more than part-time attention from his mother days after arriving in the world. Morover, other than a campaign pledge to “have a friend and advocate in the White House,"Palin also has no record on disability issues nor has she presented a disability agenda since her failed bid for the vice-presidency. Her rhetoric rings louder than her indignation.
