If you have not seen the May 13-19, 2009 issue of the Guardian, I encourage you to grab a copy. It features a fine cover story by Guardian City Editor Steven T. Jones on the state of commuter cycling in San Francisco. In it, Jones captures the love cyclists have for riding their bikes, wonders aloud at Mayor Gavin Newsom's motivations for supporting cycling initiatives, and makes a good case for the positive impact commuter cycling has on everything from the reduction of traffic and greenhouse gases to the improvement of one's health. A pair of sidebars by Rebecca Bowe (six ideas to boost SF's bikeability) and Molly Freedenberg (bike art) round out the feature.
Reading the print version of the Guardian, I could not help but notice that the Editor's Notes, an opinion piece, and the paper's editorial all concerned Muni, whose own health is related to the push to make more of the city's streets safe for cyclists. All in all, the issue is a fine read, and whets the appetite for this summer's anticipated lifting of the three-year-old injunction against the city's Bike Plan.
