Greek research shows benefits of wine and veggies (AP/Giannkouris)

Research on foods eaten in the so-called “Mediterranean Diet” show that consuming beans and red wine may increase your odds of living longer. A study at Harvard that examined the diets of 23,000 Greeks showed that those who ate more beans, vegetables, fruits, nuts and olive oil while drinking about a glass of red wine a day, while eating only small amounts of meat, generally lived longer than their compatriots.

In this research, eating fish, cereals and cutting back on dairy didn’t increase life expectancy.

Professor Dimitrios Trichopoulos at the Harvard School of Public Health, who headed a team of scientists that studied these people for almost nine years, explains that drinking small amounts of wine with meals, keeping meat portions small and devouring vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans and olive oil can increase the chances of longer life.
