You've heard of the Lemonade diet, the Cookie diet, the Banana diet and countless other "food" type fad diets that have worked, or not worked for participants trying to get rid of excess, unsightly weight. But have you heard of the Rice Diet? Yes, another "food" diet. But not one to discount lightly. The Rice Diet Solution is not a fad, it has been around for more than 70 years, initially created to help individuals with high blood pressure, and the diet is now used primarily to facilitate weight loss.
The Rice Diet is not for the person that wants to lose 10 pounds to look good for the class reunion; it is designed for people that need to lose at least 50 to 100 pounds. Kitty Gurkin Rosati, the nutrition director of The Rice Diet Program emphasis that the first phase of the program limits participants sodium intake to only 50 milligrams a day, because the average person consumes around 3,500 mg instead of the recommended 2,400 mg based on a 2,000 calorie diet. The whole low-salt, low-fat diet was started in 1939 by Walter Kempner to help people control their high blood pressure, so they could live longer.
The Rice Diet Solution programs' success is attributed low-sodium meals containing no more than 250mg of sodium. The Rice House located in Durham North Carolina, prides itself in operating a successful weight loss program and serving local, organic no salt added foods. Gurkin Rosati blames salt on triggering food cravings. When salt in food is reduced, people more easily recognize when they are full. Phase one of the program only allows participants or Ricers to eat fruit and grains which equates to only 50 mg of sodium and about 1,ooo calories.
The Rice Diet's second phase allows 250 mg of sodium, organic foods, grass-fed beef, but still maintains 1.000 calories a day. The third phase is to learn how to live after leaving Rice House consisting of a diet consuming 1,000 to 1,500 calories daily and 500 to 1,000mg of sodium.
The dramatic changes are the result of the low-sodium foods the program offers--no meal has more than 250 milligrams. Gurkin Rosati says salt can sometimes sneak into foods. "Most salt in foods is hidden," she says. "It's not always from a salt shaker." The foods served at The Rice House are local and organic. No salt is added to any of the foods. "It cost us more, but we feel we have to be consistent in what we preach," Gurkin Rosati says.
The Rice Diet sounds great and after being around for 70 years it certainly doesn't sound like a fad. According to the Herald Sun.com, Jennifer Fusaro from Narragansett, R.I. moved to Durham to participate in the program and had this to say about the Rice Diet, "This is the best decision of my life," Fusaro says. "It's a whole paradigm shift in lifestyle." While on the diet, Fusaro has lost an average of 4 to 6 pounds a week with diet and exercise. After not being able to bike for three years, Fusaro has recently been able to take to the trails once again. Fusco has lost 60 pounds since July 2009 and her goal is to lose 100 pounds.
Sound too good to be true? Well, take a deeper look at the Rice Diet program. The program really seems to work. There are usually 40-50 participants or Ricers enrolled at any given time and they meet daily with physicians, receive medical checkups, attend workshops on menu planning, exercise options, healthy cooking, etc. Ok. so far, but the average stay at the Rice House to participate in the Rice Diet program is about a month, with men losing about 29 pounds and woman losing around 19 pounds. The punch line is the program costs $2,300 for the 1st week, $1,800 for the 2nd week, $1,000 for the 3rd week, $800 for the 4th week, and $665 per each additional week. Whew...do the math. A four-week stay is $5,900!! And the program doesn't even cover board. Local hotels and housing arrangements are offered at reduced rates.
There have been some really good things said about this program. Gurkin Rosati boasts that the participants practically see immediate results which puts the Rice Diet program in a class of it's own. "The results we get here are so dramatic that coming into work is a joy," Gurkin Rosati says. "It works. People like results."
