*News Alert!*

President Obama announced today, Friday May 8, 2009, new plans for the country’s unemployment system.  It’s clear that the jobless need more than they’re getting as emergency unemployment benefits have been extended and face possibly another extension still.  The plan here, announced today, is to give people the opportunity to improve their chances of getting hired by going back to school.

Those with unemployment often can’t afford to go to school (during a prime time to increase relevant skills).  Since you have to be actively searching for a job while on unemployment, many returning to school lose their benefits.  Yet, while applying to schools, they do not qualify for financial aid because this aid is determined by the prior year’s income.

President Obama wants everyone to have the chance for education.  This is why he announced a new government-run site, in conjunction with the Department of Labor and Education departments: Opportunity.gov.  This site will assist unemployed citizens in getting the education necessary to secure a new job.

I will feature more about this new site as it developments and as I explore it further, but for now, read Obama’s speech here.
