Here’s a tip for all you Peruvian gals out there- don’t get pregnant.
Apparently, it’s incredibly bad for your health.
Amnesty International reported today on the ‘scandalous rates’ of death amongst pregnant women in Peru. The maternal mortality rate hovers somewhere between 185 in every 100, 000 pregnant women and 240 in every 100, 000, depending on who you’re asking- the Peruvian government, or the United Nations.
To put that into a little perspective- in wealthy developed nations, the number is more like 9 for every 100, 000 births.
For those of you who might be under the false impression that Peru is somewhat like Borat’s interpretation of Kazakhstan, think again. As far as developing nations go, it ain’t exactly the Ritz- but then again, it ain’t exactly Afghanistan either. Peru
Simple- because they’re born poor. Or they speak the wrong language or dialect. Perhaps they just live too far away from an urban area and adequate medical centers. It’s sad but true- women of ‘lower’ social standing in Peru more often than not lack access to the same health services afforded to their well-heeled sisters in Lima or Trujillo. I have to give the Peruvians credit- when it comes to class division, these guys really take the idea and run with it.
According to Amnesty’s report, 27 percent of deaths take place during pregnancy, 26 percent (!) during birth itself and 46 percent during the first six weeks after childbirth.
Amnesty is urging the top brass in Peru to change their ways… here’s hoping the government actually listens. Either way, this Examiner feels compelled to warn pregnant foreigners planning a trip to sunny Peru- perhaps it’s best if you brought your baby to term somewhere else.
I hear Ecuador is nice this time of year.
There are now only 1260 days left until the End of the World.
