Events are spiraling into the surreal at Redskins Park. The day after the Redskins hired Sherman Lewis as an offensive consultant without knowing what his exact role will be, defensive coordinator Greg Blache announced that he would no longer speak with the media ,and cancelled both his Comcast Sports Net and NBC 4 appearances.
The Redskins apparently received permission from the NFL to circumvent the league rule requiring teams to make coordinators available to the media. Secondary coach Jerry Gray will now fill in for Blache. Just last week Blache threw himself under the bus assuming responsibility for the defensive breakdown against Detroit.
But wait, the plot thickens. Washington Times scribe Ryan O’Halloran, spotted Blache departing Redskins Park this evening, shortly after 5:00 PM. It is highly unusual for a coordinator to leave that early on any weekday during the season, as they spend many a late night at the office burning the midnight oil in preparation for Sunday’s game.
Naturally, the Lewis hire generated much speculation regarding Jim Zorn’s future with the team. Now, Blache going mum with the media and his early exit from Redskins Park today only adds more grist for the rumor mill. Zorn cited “personal reasons” as the factor in Blache’s decision to stop speaking with the media. Whatever the truth is—and we may never know—the Redskins look like a team in the middle of a lost season less than half way through it.
While this season looks hopeless, Deadspin weighs in on the hopelessness of the Redskins franchise under Dan Snyder.
For more biting criticism see this broadside on the Redskins from Hall of Fame running back John Riggins, who skewers the Redskins without using the word “Redskins.” The money quote: “I’m not sure this is the way to run a big time professional franchise.”
