Alan Cox and Stacy Keach in "Frost/Nixon." Photo by Carol Rosegg

The movie tanked at the Oscars, but here comes the play!

A British talk show host nabs the interview of the century, but is he too much of a lightweight to get Tricky Dick to do anything other than rewrite his sullied past?

Well, we know the answer. Those of us who have never seen the famed David Frost interviews with recently resigned president Richard Nixon, may well have seen Peter Morgan’s hit play “Frost/Nixon,” or its movie adaptation.

The national tour of “Frost/Nixon” opens March 11 for a quickie stint at the Ahmanson Theatre. Stacey Keach plays Nixon. Alan Cox is Frost.

Alas, Frank Langella and Michael Sheen _ who originated the roles _ are long since done Nixon-ing and Frost-ing, although their performances are immortalized in the film. Langella, as most of the civilized world knows by now, lost the Oscar to Sean Penn  of "Milk."

The play was a smash, first at the Donmar Warehouse, later in London’s West End and on Broadway. The national tour, re-staged by Artistic Director Michael Grandage should be interesting…assuming everyone’s not reached their “F/N” saturation point.

Incidentally, you can read my Q&A with Grandage in the show’s program, or on the Center Theatre Group website here.
