Armin Shimerman stars in "Misalliance" at the Odyssey Theatre

No matter who you are or how famous you get, I guess you never entirely live down having “boldy gone where no man has gone before.” Then again, what’s to live down? Apparently those “Star Trek” conventions make for some pretty good coin.

Anyway, Armin Shimerman, a helluva good classical actor, played the Ferengi bartender Quark on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” from 1993 to 1999, and appeared on “The Next Generation” and “Voyager.” He’s got an equally devout following, I’m sure, for his stint as Principal Snyder on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Plus he has more than 125 film, TV and video game (mustn’t forget the video game) credits. They’ve got him playing the CEO/Boss Man in these three “Resist Evil” movies and _ perhaps fittingly _ he has a role in the 2009 movie “For Christ’s Sake”

He’s also a stage veteran, having performed on Broadway, at regional centers around the country and in Los Angeles. He has taught Shakespeare to high school students, and at various universities including UCLA. Much of this is learned, BTW, at the excellent if potentially outdated bio on Startrek.com. Never let it be said that the “Star Trek” franchise doesn’t know the value of its players.

The most recent time I saw Shimerman perform live was playing the Fool in a 2005 production of “King Lear” at the San Diego Repertory Theatre. My girlfriend at the time _ later my wife _ was particularly jazzed at meeting him after the show. Because, natch, she was into “Deep Space Nine.”

Shimerman’s back on the boards in a production of George Bernard Shaw’s “Misalliance” opening March 21 and playing through April at the Odyssey Theatre.

Here’s a brief synopsis of the play from the press release: “Attractive and spirited Hypatia Tarleton is betrothed to the decent-enough but emotionally immature Bentley Summerhays.  She longs for adventure to drop out of the sky and into her life.  Sure enough, a small aircraft crash lands on the Tarletons’ estate. The pilot is the dashing and handsome Joey Percival. He is accompanied by the daring Polish acrobat and aviatrix, Lina. Hypatia gets some ideas.  Lina has a few ideas of her own.  Add Victorian but definitely naughty parents, and a gun-toting revenge seeker, into the mix and you have the makings for a hilarious romp. By the end of the afternoon, there will be eight marriage proposals.  Which of these can be happy, and which are just misalliances?”

It’s a pretty fair cast that Elina de Santos has brought together: You’ve got Greg Mullavey, Orestes Arcuni, Maggie Peach, Nick Mennell, Molly Schaffer, Abigail Rose Solomon, Christopher Franciosa and David Clayberg.

And Armin Shimerman. May he live long and prosper, particularly on stage.

For those looking for a quicker Shavian fix, the Colony Theatre’s production of “Candida” closes this weekend at 555 N. Third St. in Burbank.
