R-71, the so-called "everything but marriage" legislation, will become law in Washington State. This is good news for those who value fairness, justice and family. The results deal a blow to religious zealots and other bigots who oppose equality for the gay and lesbian community.
The same crowd determined to punish their gay brothers and sisters in Maine lost their bid to enforce their prejudice in Washington. In light of the devastating defeat in Maine, victory in Washington is a small consolation for those who cherish American values of freedom and justice, and those repulsed by religious tyranny.
Sometimes a minority must be protected from the tyranny of the majority. The hatred, bigotry and discrimination of our religious institutions has gone on too long.
Good and decent people must stand up to the hate mongers. Homophobia has no place in a civilized society. A society that denies a minority basic rights because of religious ignorance and superstition is intolerable. Say no to hate.
The fight will continue. Justice will prevail.
