Life without Teixeira: Is it Millar time once again?
In the world of MLB, the rich kids got everything they wanted this Christmas: two pitchers and a 28-year-old first baseman under their tree. So far, the poor kids got a defensive shortstop and a lump of coal.
Now that the dust has settled in the Mark Teixeira mess, it’s time to move on. Someone still has to play first base. Will it be Aubrey Huff, who has never played more than 51 games at first in a season? Will it be one of the free agents available this offseason? Check out the
somewhat lackluster list here.
Not in love with any of those names? How about Kevin Millar? At the end of last season, the club told Kevin they were going to pursue other options, but promised to keep his agent’s number. Well, the O’s pursued their best option, and that didn’t work out. Good ole Kev may live to “Cowboy Up” in Baltimore for one more year. Good news, Kevin. You’ll get to see your old buddies in Beantown 18 more times!
In all honesty, there are worse things than re-signing Kevin Millar to a one year, three-million-dollar contract. It would be great if the birds had a prospect that they could throw out there in April to see what he looks like, but they really don’t. And they would be foolish to pursue a washed-up “big name” like Jason Giambi just to get a consolation prize after losing out on Tex. Andy MacPhail isn’t foolish. He won’t be going in that direction.
So Baltimore, would you call Millar’s agent at this point? Would you look for another big bat like Adam Dunn? Would you toss Oscar Salazar on first just to roll the dice? Would you burn Millar’s number so you don’t do something foolish after a long night out?
